I know many questions will come to your mind, what is this Chagos Island, Chagos Archipelago, what is its history, what has India done and which military base was there of UK and USA in the middle of the Indian Ocean?
If you go south from India, you will see a lot of islands here. All of these are part of the Chagos Archipelago. An archipelago is a group of islands and the most important island among them is Diego Garcia, the military base of the United States of America in the middle of the Indian Ocean. If you can notice properly from a distance, this location is so good. USA gets access to the entire Indo-Pacific and it is said that USA has deployed nuclear submarines, nuclear weapons and many other things here. You will also see the satellite view of this military base.

In the 17th century, we see that the French come and capture the Chagos Island. We are talking about the time when France was ruled by Napoleon, but then Napoleon was defeated and after that British control started increasing in this entire region. The British said that they would capture this island, Chagos Island. Mauritius refused and gave full resistance from its side.
But the British were powerful, their empire was expanding and they easily colonized this island. And if you are wondering whether they colonized only Chagos Island and not Mauritius, then they also made Mauritius their colony.
In the year 1965, the UK had understood that if not today then tomorrow they will have to grant independence to Mauritius. Decolonization campaign is going on all over the world. India is a big supporter of the fact that Mauritius should get independence. So when the UK realized that okay we will have to give independence, the first thing they did was to separate Chagos Island from Mauritius and said that this is a separate area, this is British Indian Ocean Territory.
Then Mauritius was given separate independence. In 1968, the people of Mauritius protested that this is wrong and they are dividing a part of our country and claiming that this part has become British Indian Ocean Territory.
UK and USA committed a lot of atrocities on the native people of Chagos Island, the details of which I am telling you here, it has been reported by the UK media itself that from 1967 to 1973, the entire population of Chagos Island was forcefully removed because American soldiers had to come to UK being an ally of USA, since UK has very good relations with USA, UK gave this island Diego Garcia to USA and said that you can carry on military activities here, in return, if India or any other country raises an issue internationally in the UN regarding Chagos Island of Mauritius, you should support us, for decades the illegal rule of UK and USA continued on these islands.
Mauritius was left quite alone in this war. Mauritius is a very small country, a group of islands. How could they fight against the US and the UK? But then India enters here.
India started openly supporting Mauritius and said that Chagos Islands belong to you and you will get them back
India’s entry was very important. After India’s complete support, Mauritius went to the International Court of Justice. Mauritius won the case there and the International Court of Justice said that why is the UK occupying these islands? The Chagos Islands should be returned to Mauritius.
Even after this verdict, UK kept holding on to these islands for 5 years. India told UK many times that you have lost the case, many countries have told you that these islands do not belong to you, give these islands to Mauritius.
But the UK and the US said that what about our important security objectives? Once we lose the island, our military base will also be shut down. India understood this and therefore suggested that you do one thing, return this island to Mauritius and in return we will try to get you Diego Garcia and other islands on lease for 99 years.
Now justice is done here, when you take something on lease, then you have to make payment every year, so it has not been decided yet that how many million dollars will the UK pay to Mauritius every year, but now what will happen here is that this island will belong here, it will be shown to Mauritius on the map that this is a part of Mauritius, but Mauritius will most likely give it on lease for 99 years.
This island will go to UK and UK will hand over this island to USA again. Now you can ask a question that in all this, UK and USA have won, Diego Garcia will remain with USA only, right?
Look, the matter is not that simple. There will be talks of a 99-year lease deal with Mauritius. Mauritius will ask for a lot of money. UK and USA will have to recover that money from their banks. And remember, a lease is a lease. If tomorrow Mauritius breaks the lease and adds a clause in it that in emergency cases we can ask for our island back, then in that case, UK and US will always be under pressure. The complete area which they had occupied is no longer theirs. They have accepted internationally that Chagos Archipelago is not their part. It belongs to Mauritius.
